Q1 What is cod liver oil?
A1 Cod liver oil is extracted from the liver of the cod. It is not
only rich in omega 3 essential fatty acids but is also high
in the fat-soluble vitamins A and D.
Q2 What are the health benefits of cod liver oil?
A2 Cod liver oil has a long traditional history of supporting
the immune system.
Q3 How does cod liver oil support the immune system?
A3 It is well established that Vitamin A and D support the
immune system.1 Vitamin D is known to enhance
the function of immune cells. For instance, it is needed
to activate T-cells — also known as ‘killer cells’ — that
detect and destroy foreign bodies such as viruses and
bacteria.8,9
Low levels of Vitamin D have been associated with
an increased susceptibility to infections, especially
respiratory tract infections2-4 and clinical studies have
shown that taking vitamin D can reduce the odds of
developing a respiratory infection.7,9
Vitamin A supports the immune system by maintaining
the health of the epithelial cells. These are cells that
line the insides of the lungs and the digestive tract,
and produce mucous that stops foreign materials from
entering the body.4
An alteration in the respiratory epithelium and cilia is
believed to be the underlying mechanism behind respiratory
infections. Unhealthy epithelial cells can’t act as an effective
barrier and a person may become more vulnerable to
respiratory tract infections. Cilia cells sweep mucous and
dirt out of the lungs, therefore a loss of cilia cells and an
increase in mucous secreting cells favours the adherence
of bacteria and consequently, increases the risk of infections
of the respiratory tract.5,6
Q4 How is cod liver oil different from fish oil?
A4 While they both come from fish, they come from different
fish species and each one has its own unique nutritional
profile and health benefits.
Fish oil is usually sourced from fatty fish such as tuna,
herring, salmon, mackerel and anchovies. These types
of fish are high in the omega 3 essential fatty acids
eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid
(DHA), which are known for their anti-inflammatory properties.
Cod liver oil is extracted from the liver of the cod. It contains
less omega 3 essential fatty acids than other fish, but is
high in vitamin A and D. Due to its different nutritional profile,
it has different health benefits.
